Guest Chef 'Pop-up' Dining Series

We invited some of Joburg’s best-loved chefs and ex-restaurateurs – to host a series of pop-up dining events in Basalt, our casual fine-dining restaurant.

We’ve teamed up with some of this city’s best Chefs to offer local gourmands the opportunity to experience their talents once again. This time through a series of refined pop-up dining experiences hosted in Basalt. These events also provide an opportunity for some of the Chef’s kitchen and restaurant teams to reunite and do what they do best.”

CHEF CANDICE PHILIP: 26th-28th November & 3rd – 5th December

Formerly the Head Chef of GREI at The Saxon, Candice Philip achieved noteworthy distinction during her 15-year tenure at one of Joburg’s finest five-star hotels.  Having previously worked under legendary local chefs David Higgs and Luke Dale-Roberts, chef Candice eventually took over the reigns by introducing her own successful dining concept, GREI, where she was awarded the Mercedes Benz Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star award for 2018, and in the same year, the Young Chef Award for Conde Nast House & Garden SA Gourmet Restaurant Awards. During her guest chef pop-up at The Peech, Candice will present diners with a finely curated five-course tasting menu, including a cocktail pairing prepared by one of Joburg’s best mixologists. Renowned for her attention to detail and delicate balancing simplicity with sophistication, guests should anticipate a memorable sensory journey.


After a very successful pop in November the team at La Petite Maison are considering a come back in December. This chef pop-up welcomes the reunion of alumni, with all three chefs having graduated from Italy’s prestigious ALMA La Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiana. Chefs Tyeye Ngxola & Tim Stewart (ex-La Petite Maison, where they soon became known for their French-inspired, refined dining experience) in collaboration with Basalt’s head chef Feni Malebye-Lutalo will present a sublime five-course tasting menu, paired with some unique, boutique-style local wines from smaller producers. The wines will be presented by sommelier Clive Hlabathi (co-founder of local wine agency, Toasted Barrels).
